Update : 12/03/2018:
Day 7 and still no issue. I think its fixed! A bad relay was the root cause. The tech at my dealer got advise from the factory on this resolution. Its nice to know that the escalation path there works.
Update : 11/28/2018:
The dealer replaced the TCM control relay on the TIPM claiming it was faulty and sometimes did not activate the TCM causing the failure. This is logical and I am hopeful that this is the problem. With an intermittent problem I have to drive it for a while to see. Today is day 3 and no problem yet. I am hoping that was it.
Original Post Early November :
When driving the Jeep, randomly from time to time, the TCM will lose connection and the transmission oil temperature will not be sent to the computer. The EVIC shows "---" instead of a temp along with the HOTOIL error. The transmission goes into limp mode. After a minute or two the TCM regains the connection and the Jeep operates as normal. This problem can happen any time while driving but often happens on startup. When it happens on startup the engine has a multiple second delay before turning over. It does not seem like the battery is bad since it reads 12.6 volts when the engine is off and 14.4 when charging. When the engine finally turns over, even when cold, the dash display shows HOTOIL. This happens when the engine is completely cold or when warm as well. It does seem to happen more often after the vehicle has been sitting off for several hours.
I have had the vehicle into the dealer a couple of times but as with many hard to reproduce issues they are having trouble figuring out what is wrong. They have replaced the TCM but that has not helped, although after the TCM change it seems the error happens only on startup now. It must be something else. I am driving the car and trying to reproduce the issue and gather as much data as I can to help as much as I can before returning to the dealer again.
On the internet no one else seems to have this problem except :

I have never driven my vehicle in the way that person describes but perhaps there is some pinch in the wiring harness. CA roads are not smooth. I am hoping the dealer will figure it out.
Here is a picture of the dash while it is happening.
Here is a video of it happening in the morning from a cold start. If you listen to the audio I walk you through what is happening step by step from the start to the error to the vehicle returning to normal by itself.
Here is another a video of it happening, of the vehicle returning to normal, and of reading the codes in real time via an obdii monitor. The reports below were generated by a fancier monitor than I used in the video.
Here is a picture of the dash after the vehicle regains connection with the trans temp reading. Please note that when in park the trans temp EVIC reading is actually the coolant temperature. Only when in gear does the trans temp show. This is a well documented Wrangler feature. At this time the trans temp was about 127 since the vehicle was in the driveway (second picture). The point is that the HOTOIL message is no longer active after some time since the temp is fine and the correct reading is finally reaching the computer. The vehicle drives just fine at this point, not in limp mode, and the check engine light indicates that the computer has recorded the issue.
Next is the freeze frame report from an obdii monitor and also the error code report. An odd thing is the error on cyclinder 10 when the car is a 6 cyclinder. Perhaps this means something else or is a clue to the real issue, I do not know yet.

Did you ever get this figured out? I am having the same issue.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever get this figured out? I am having the same issue.
ReplyDeleteSo, we had similar issues with ours and had the relay replaced. No problems for a month or so, then it started back. Did you ever have any other issues?
ReplyDeletedid you ever resolve the issue
ReplyDeleteI replaced my relay a month or so ago and it was fine and then it did it again. I am also having an issue with a oil pressure error as well po6de
I am a tech working on a 2012 jeep wrangler experiencing this problem. I had code p0571- brake switch 1. This is a can buss controller. I have been working with a local jeep dealer and we are thinking It is a T.I.P.M. Concern I have replaced the brake light switch I have run pinchex for voltage at the break light switch all showing good my customer drives the Jeep and then randomly will display how do I message and throw all the codes you have experienced of experienced believe it to be the tip Em is failing on a circuit board I'm a Nissan Tech and I've had this problem with what we call an ipdm PDM same concept where it'll give us key codes now let the car start shut off fuel Palm Mess with heater controls numerous things. This is a computer that controls nurmous system. When this happens my customer also states they lose speedometer and tach function. I have reset the ads, calibrated the steering angle sensor and it still randomly sets. most common trigger is bumps.
